Seondeok

Queen of Korea - Shilla Dynasty, 632 - 647

  • The first female ruler of the Korean peninsula. She never married and made the arrangement for her niece to succeed her throne before her death.

  • Reigning in the transition from Bronze Age into Iron Age, she made a proclamation to put aside a portion of iron production for farming equipment, instead of weaponry.

  • She discovered many talented officials regardless of their births.

  • It is believed that her benevolence planted the patriotism that laid the foundation for Shilla's unification of the peninsula defeating two larger kingdoms.

  • She recorded and arranged all different ancient martial arts as a training manual for her royal guards called 'Hwarang.' The manual became the core foundation of modern day's Taekwondo.

  • It is recorded that she predicted the date and time of her death.
